Áed is one of the four children in the Children of Lir legend. They are transformed into swans for 900 years and we all learn this story in school. It’s one of the most popular Irish legends. Áed Rúad was also the name of a legendary High King of Ireland. There are a lot of modern variants of Áed, including Aidan, which is a very popular name in Ireland.
