Fun fact
Cú means hound, and magh means a plain, so the words come together as hound of the plain. This old name was used by the O'Kane and MacCloskey families in Derry. It was Anglicised as Cooey, which gives you a much easier clue to the pronunciation than the Irish spelling does!
