Dubh means dark or black, and laoch means hero or warrior. This old first name survives in the surname Ó Dubhlaoich, Anglicised as Dooley. One branch of that family had the privilege of inaugurating the O'Carroll ruler of Ely. So there is a royal ceremony connection behind the name too!
